Valerie Jarrett Inspires TYWLS Students

Earlier this spring, our Girls’ Education team hosted a powerful and inspiring discussion with Valerie Jarrett, former Senior Advisor to President Barack Obama! Students from each of our five TYWLS attended the event, and as this was the first in-person event in two years, students and staff alike were thrilled at this opportunity to gather in person once again.

Three of our students, Abeer, Dippannita, and Irrina, were selected to facilitate the conversation with Ms. Jarrett and asked questions about her experience as a high school student, navigating the political landscape as a woman of color, and advice for young women who dream of creating a successful and impactful career. Students in the audience were also invited to ask questions, and Ms. Jarrett gave valuable advice and thoughtful responses on friendship, confidence, and living in the moment. There were several touching moments; such as when Ms. Jarrett talked about how she was an extremely shy young person – how public speaking would bring her to tears! One student asked for advice on how to overcome her own shyness, tearing up as she asked the question. Ms. Jarrett and the student shared a moment of authentic connection which was one of many powerful moments in the program.

Our thanks to The New York Academy of Medicine for providing a beautiful venue for this event. Also, a special thank you to TYWLS Queens student, Tanisha, who was our official event photographer. Click through the slideshow below to see a selection of pictures from the event.
