Young Professionals Career Expo: Supporting Students through Post-Secondary Pathways

The Alumni Engagement team recently hosted one of their signature events, The Young Professionals Expo. This virtual event provided CBI high school Seniors and alumni an opportunity to meet with free/low-cost alternative pathway providers and learn about programs dedicated to helping students choose a career path that closely aligns with their interests. It was also an opportunity to network with their peers and program representatives to help advance their careers.

During the virtual event, FDNY and City Year representatives expressed their ‘Why’ and the benefits of joining an alternative program.

This was an opportunity for me to help and work in the community that I live in, helping the youth understand they can still make a good living even if college is not the path for them. Being a first responder is a selfless job, and being in the FDNY doesn’t mean you only fight fires; you can take endless career paths in the FDNY, such as being an EMT, Dispatcher, Administrator, etc.

Claudius Caines from the FDNY

Justin McGhie from the FDNY shared that, although he went to college, joining the FDNY was an excellent opportunity to help his community and give back. The FDNY has a pipeline program for students aged 14 to 29. The pipeline program helps improve diversity and recruit students; the FDNY is for everyone, regardless of their post-secondary background.

Randal McKoy from City Year introduced CBI alumni to the federally funded program that specifically helps young people ages 18-25 enter the national service program as mentors and student success coaches for one year. During that time, participants serve schools nationwide and mentor young people academically, socially, and emotionally. City Year participants receive a $7,000 scholarship at the end of their 11-month term.
