TYWLS at the Workplace: Intercos
In a new collaboration with Intercos in partnership with Estée Lauder Companies (ELC), 10th grade students from The Young Women’s Leadership School (TYWLS) of Manhattan recently had the opportunity to gain valuable insights into the intricacies of the beauty and cosmetics industry.
TYWLS at the Workplace is one of Student Leadership Network’s signature volunteer events. Partner organizations invite TYWLS students for a site visit to meet and network with company employees and learn about what their jobs look like on a day-to-day basis. Partnering with cosmetics innovator Intercos and global beauty giant ELC, the event aimed to inspire and educate students about potential careers in this thriving sector.

What made this event even more special was the participation of Intercos, marking their inaugural involvement in this volunteer initiative. Welcoming TYWLS students into their iconic Fifth Avenue headquarters showcases the company’s commitment to fostering the next generation of female leaders and diversifying the workforce in the beauty and cosmetics industries.
Throughout the day, students were exposed to the myriad disciplines that contribute to the success of companies like Intercos. From business development to marketing, research and development (R&D), and quality assurance, the students gained a comprehensive understanding of the creative and technical roles that make up this multifaceted industry. Intercos professionals shared their experiences, shedding light on the skills and qualities essential for success in each field. The exposure to successful women across the beauty and cosmetics sector served as a source of inspiration, showing our TYWLS students that they too can aspire to lead and innovate in traditionally male-dominated fields.
One of the highlights of the event was a fun hands-on experience specially designed for the students, who had the unique opportunity to mix their own lip glosses under the supervision of the Head of R&D, Marym Mohiby. This practical activity not only allowed them to engage with the creative aspects of the industry but also provided a glimpse into the precision and science behind formulating cosmetic products.

The staff at Intercos went above and beyond by imparting valuable insights and advice to the students. Natalie Riehl, VP of Marketing, encouraged the students that whatever path they take, they should “do it for themselves.” This powerful message resonated throughout the day as other professionals emphasized the importance of advocating for oneself, trusting one’s instincts, cultivating a strong support network, and collaborating.

The collaboration between TYWLS Manhattan, Intercos, and ELC exemplifies the power of partnerships in shaping leaders of the future workforce by providing students with exposure to diverse career opportunities. Initiatives like these play a pivotal role in building a more inclusive and empowered future for young women everywhere.
