Expanding Horizons: TYWLS Students Explore FinTech Careers at Cash App

Tenth-grade students from The Young Women’s Leadership School (TYWLS) of Brooklyn had an incredible opportunity to visit Cash App’s office as part of our TYWLS at the Workplace career awareness program. The visit offered students a firsthand look at one of today’s innovative financial technology companies and introduced diverse career paths that they might not have previously considered.

With a smartphone in nearly every pocket, digital wallets have revolutionized how people interact with money by creating a virtual version of a person’s financial accounts accessible through their phone. Cash App is a digital financial platform, commonly known as a digital wallet. While it is not a bank, Cash App allows users to send and receive money instantly, invest in stocks and Bitcoin, and manage their finances through a mobile interface.

What struck our students most was the wide variety of professional roles available at the company. Through conversations with current Cash App employees, students learned about roles in software engineering, user experience design, finance, and engineering. The visit highlighted different aspects of modern tech companies that require talent from every academic discipline. With the focus on STEAM curricula at TYWLS, students made connections between what they’re learning at school and how those subjects are applied in the real world.

The day began with an engaging speakers panel featuring women from different departments who shared their educational backgrounds and career journeys. Many of our students were excited to learn that several Cash App professionals had changed career paths several times before finding their current roles.

Following the panel, students joined small groups for more intimate discussions with employees, allowing for personalized questions and connections. Each group then completed an interactive marketing and design activity to pitch a product to Cash App employees. Volunteers also led an office tour to showcase Cash App’s collaborative workspace design, featuring meeting rooms, quiet focus areas, and plant-filled brainstorming spaces.

During the reflection sessions on the bus ride home, students expressed a deeper interest in technology careers and an appreciation for seeing how classroom subjects translate to professional environments.

Thank you to the entire Cash App team for hosting our students and providing such a valuable experience! These workplace visits create lasting impressions that help our students envision diverse professional futures.
