Celebrating CBI Impact!

We are so proud of our CollegeBound Initiative (CBI) seniors for committing to the next step in their post-secondary lives! Whether they’ve decided to enroll in a SUNY, CUNY, HBCU or another private institution, or even a career program, CBI students have worked with their directors of college counseling (DCCs) to determine the best-fit decision for themselves and their families. Their decisions are personal, powerful, and deeply inspiring.

Join us in celebrating our CBI Seniors and alumni as they get ready for the next chapter in their story! Read on to learn about and hear from some of the incredible young people in our CBI network.

Meet Some of Our CollegeBound Students

From first-generation college students to those navigating a complex application process, these young people have reached a milestone that reflects years of determination, support from dedicated DCCs, and unwavering belief in their futures.

CollegeBound Month is, above all, a celebration—but it’s also a powerful reminder of just how extraordinary these students are. In a world where the path to higher education is more complex than ever, with skyrocketing tuition, shifting admissions policies, and access gaps that disproportionately affect students from underserved communities, their achievements shine even brighter.

That’s what makes the CollegeBound Initiative so special. With equity at the heart of our work, we uplift student voices, break down barriers, and create pathways where potential can flourish. Our students don’t just go to college—they step into their power and shape the future.

Neveah is Young Women’s College Prep of Rochester’s first-ever NCAA Scholar!

She will compete in Division II Track and Field at D’Youville University. The school celebrated her accomplishment with a special signing day earlier this spring.

“What I am most looking forward to about my next steps after high school is starting a new life journey, learning more about myself, and the new environment around me. I am also very excited to explore life outside of home, meet new friends, and be open to any opportunities that come my way. Most importantly, I am thrilled to compete in track and field at a higher level.”

With a passion for giving back and a clear eye toward his future, Alex will continue to shine brightly at NYU!

A longtime volunteer with Hamilton-Madison House, he has supported programs for the elderly and farmers market initiatives for the community. He has also earned college credits through completing community college courses at BMCC while still in high school.

“Since childhood, I have always aspired to attend NYU, sparked by its violet hues, the towering buildings, and its notable NYC spirit. I want to become a Data Scientist and saw the countless resources and expert professionals NYU has to offer for me. Due to NYU’s location, I can still volunteer with the Hamilton Madison House community center—continuing to mentor, serve, and stay rooted in the place that shaped me.”

Smiling female student with braided hair and wearing glasses, is holding up up a notebook that says Baruch College on the cover

After taking a college class while still in high school, Ermelie is ready to return to Baruch’s campus as a CUNY Macaulay Honors College student!

She credits her director of college counseling, Mr. Alberto Lainez, for making the journey to college as smooth as possible at the High School for Youth and Community Development. With his guidance, she felt confident in taking time to choose the right college that aligned with her interests and passions. She is excited to start college this fall!

“I really want to go to Baruch because last semester I took a psychology class there and already met some of the professors. I really like the environment and atmosphere at Baruch, and I want to study business which is what they’re known for. The financial aid they’re offering me is great. Since I got into the honors college, my tuition is basically covered!”

Ryan M. | CBI Class of 2021 | CUNY City College Class of 2025 | Sophie Davis Biomedical Education Program/CUNY School of Medicine Class of 2027

What was something about your time in college that made you the most proud?

I’m most proud of how much I grew during my time in college, academically, personally, and professionally. I challenged myself with difficult coursework, took on leadership and service roles, and found ways to stay involved in my community. That growth and balance is something I’ll always carry with me.

What’s next for you – what are your plans post-college?

I’m planning to continue my education and training while exploring opportunities that allow me to stay involved in meaningful, hands-on work. I want to keep learning, growing, and finding ways to make a positive impact wherever I go.

Ermina C. | TYWLS Class of 2021 | CUNY Hunter College Class of 2025 | Columbia University Class of 2026

What was something about your time in college that made you the most proud?

During my time at Hunter College, I’ve been proud to serve as the President of Forté, a women-led business club, this year. Through Forté, I’ve had the privilege of building relationships with inspiring women across all class years and had the incredible opportunity to lead the planning of our Annual Business Gala, successfully connecting Hunter College students with alumni and industry professionals.

What’s next for you – what are your plans post-college?

I’m thrilled to share that after graduating from Hunter College, I will be pursuing my Master’s in Nonprofit Management at Columbia University on a full ride as part of the second cohort of the Columbia SPS CUNY Fellowship. This incredible opportunity wouldn’t have been possible without the unwavering support of Gabby, Pam, my former high school teacher Ms. Ritz, and the amazing communities I’ve found at Student Leadership Network and Hunter College. I am deeply grateful to everyone who has encouraged me throughout this journey, and I’m beyond excited to start this new chapter this Fall.
