Students Explore Financial Services Careers at RBC Capital Markets
As part of our early career awareness programming, tenth-grade students from The Young Women’s Leadership School (TYWLS) of Manhattan recently delved into a typical workday at RBC Capital Markets. Hosted at their downtown office, RBC Capital Markets’ team members from human resources, finance, equities trading, law, and other fields gathered for a panel discussion with the students. They talked about different subjects they studied in college and the career choices that led to their current roles.

Discovering a Variety of Skills in Finance
Students learned about RBC Capital’s work as a U.S. financial services leader with RBC offices in 15 countries worldwide. Team members emphasized a manageable work-life balance and also talked about the variety of skills needed in effective teams: analytical and math expertise for working with stock prices and equity trading, public speaking, and presentation skills for communicating in professional environments.

Following the panel, RBC employees answered questions from students in a more informal, small-group setting.
What Students Found Inspiring
Several students felt inspired and relieved to hear about RBC employees’ education and career choices. One student reflected on a broadened sense of timing: “I learned that it’s okay not to know what you want to do in five years.” Another student expressed delight at “what trading actually looks like, with the big screens with multiple tabs open” and appreciated seeing “everyone on the panel had vastly different experiences before choosing finance.”
RBC Capital Markets’ staff also led students on a tour of the office and trading floor. Of surveyed students, 100% rated the event as “excellent or good.” As the students return to their classrooms with newfound inspiration, we’re delighted to continue supporting their journeys toward exploring careers in STEM and beyond!
