On March 9th, tenth graders from The Young Women’s Leadership School of Queens had the amazing opportunity to learn about the ins and outs of working for an entertainment company at SONY headquarters.

TYWLS at the Workplace is one of Student Leadership Network’s signature events, where TYWLS students meet with employees from our partner organizations, network with them, and learn about what their jobs look like on a day-to-day basis. TYWLS Queens students started off the day by hearing from a panel of SONY’s marketing and finance team members. Each employee shared their unique educational and professional journey and what led them to their position at SONY. This was an excellent opportunity for students to learn about the various routes one can take in their career. For instance, while one employee described using her college internship at SONY to help land a full-time position at the company, another worked many different jobs after college, which ultimately gave him a better understanding of the type of work that he was passionate about.

Additionally, they offered some excellent advice to our students:

“When you have a goal in mind, don’t allow anyone or anything to change or uproot what you should be doing. You stay your course.” – Jasmine

“Every job has something that you’ll love about – you’ll always be able to find something that you love.” – Angel

After the panel discussion, students sat in the Film Screening Room to hear and learn about the high-quality sound SONY produces in their videos. They were then separated into groups for an extensive tour of the SONY offices, passing by various conference rooms and studios. As the tour ended, the students had an exciting surprise: they could go into a recording studio and practice working on the recording machinery. They learned about recording music from start to finish and were delighted to hear that some of their favorite artists had recorded in the very room they were sitting in!

A huge thank you to the employees at SONY for making this day both exciting and informative for our students, and we thank SONY for its continued support of our work in equalizing education.
